Montego Bay, Jamaica — August 19, 2023

Over 250 Seventh-day Adventist business professionals and lay members from across the Inter-American Division (IAD) gathered in Montego Bay, Jamaica, from August 16–19 for the annual Adventist Laymen’s Services and Industries (ASi) Inter-America Convention. With the theme “Reigniting the Flame for Mission,” the event underscored the urgent call to integrate faith and professional life in advancing the gospel.

In his keynote address, Dr. Leonard Johnson, IAD Executive Secretary, reminded attendees that mission must be rooted in purpose, intentionality, and urgency. “It’s not about programs or appearances,” he said. “Our objective is to uplift Christ in every sphere—homes, workplaces, schools—so others may see Jesus.”

Governor General of Jamaica, Sir Patrick Allen, commended ASi’s 25 years of service in the region, describing the organization as “a beacon of hope” and an example of how faith and commitment can bridge divides across communities.

Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism, Edmund Bartlett, praised ASi members for their influence and encouraged them to be “shapers of the conscience of the world, not takers of its positions.”

Ahead of the convention, ASi members partnered with local pastors to conduct 56 evangelistic campaigns across Jamaica—far surpassing the initial plan of 12. These efforts resulted in over 800 baptisms. Among the leaders was Roger Alleyne from Tobago, who led a four-week tent campaign in St. Mary amidst violent unrest. Despite multiple shootings and an explosion near the campaign site, Alleyne reported 43 baptisms, crediting divine intervention and persistent faith.

The convention featured over 20 seminars and presentations on topics such as digital evangelism, business ethics, health, and project development. Networking sessions, panel discussions, music, prayer, and an awards ceremony enriched the four-day gathering.

A special offering collected will benefit Port Maria High and Preparatory School and support an ASi mission project under the Mission 2000 and Beyond initiative.

In a closing charge, Dr. Lincoln Edwards, president of Northern Caribbean University, urged attendees to deepen their relationship with Christ. “As long as ASi remains mission-focused,” he said, “Christ will accompany and empower the work.”

The 2024 ASi Inter-American Division Convention is set for August 14–18 in Panama City, Panama
