Hundreds gathered at Colombia’s Adventist University in Medellin, during the opening ceremony, which was streamed live online, and included government officials, church leaders and guest speakers, to set the tone of the four-day event.

“We want you to be ‘Connected, Empowered and Transformed’ as our theme says so that we can all be able to do greater work for God and those around us,” said Dr. Marston Thomas, president of ASi Inter-America.

Thomas reported that ASi members across the Inter-American Division (IAD) have been busy in their localities engaged in the world church’s Total Member Involvement initiative and IAD’s Lord Transform Me projects.

“Many ASi-ers have conducted seminars, evangelistic campaigns and bible studies that have added many to the church,” said Thomas. “We must commend those who have extended help to various communities, health projects and facilities to take care of the sick, feeding thousands and providing homes for the homeless.”

Congresswoman from the Antioquía Department Ana Cristina Moreno Palacios welcomed the church and its ASi event to the city of Medellin. Moreno praised the visible work of the church in Medellin with 2.2 million people and included the 6.3 million people in the Antioquía Department.

“We acknowledge the work that the Adventist Church, its business owners, lawyers, institutions does for society,” said Moreno. “Your institutions to defend liberties, to educate professionals with an emphasis on service, your church’s healthy lifestyle, humanitarian and social work for the less fortunate, your work in strengthening families as the base of society in your communities, is very much appreciated.”

Keynote speaker Dr. Conrad Duncan, vice president for administration for the church in the Florida Conference, highlighted the need for Adventist professionals to be connected by the only source of power found in God’s Holy Spirit.

“We need to all be connected with Jesus Christ, work together connected with the church of God and its mission, and connected with those who are lost,” Duncan said.

“It is not possible to be connected with God and overlook the church of God,” said Duncan. “God is still leading His church and we should be connected with the church of God to ensure the mission get carried out in reaching the lost and prepare them for the soon coming of Christ.”

Participants at this year’s convention will get the opportunity to network, sit in on professional development and business management seminars, strengthen on-going projects and new projects to benefit the community.

The convention will also see Adventist lawyers join the event and take part in a forum to highlight, discuss and formulate solutions to contemporary issues and challenges affecting the Adventist Church today.

Dr. Thomas reported that during the convention, a new ASi President would be elected as well as a new board instated.

The theme for this year’s impact was “The God
who walks with me”. The initial plan was for 10 sites but by the
conclusion of the first Sabbath we had eleven (11) sites across the
District of Corozol namely: Central ,North Side, Ranchito, Xaibe,
Libertad, Calcutta, San Joaquin , San Narciso ,San Pedro ,
Concepcion and Santa Clara.

The initial projection was for 120-150 missionaries.

We had 105 missionaries who participated throughout the 3
weeks.

Despite the many challenges and set- backs , especially the
health challenge and constant battle with dehydration God
showed Himself strong in His cause and on behalf of His people.

This was a rescue operation and as soldiers were temporarily
incapacitated others volunteered to ensure that every post of
duty was manned because 55 precious souls needed to be
brought home. To God belongs all the glory for what he
continues to do through his children and young people.. We
thank Him for the many life lessons that are being learnt by
these young people even as they pledge their lives to work
for the God who is always triumphant.

There were projects executed at 10 sites which included:
Vacation Bible School, the painting of parks and the sea wall,
repairs of homes, street clean up, cleaning of community centres
and the creation of a 10 commandment mural in San Pedro.

These humanitarian projects were well received and this had a

positive effect on the visitor’s attendance for the nightly
evangelistic program. Over 208 visitors were recorded as having
attended the series.

There was tremendous excitement about the construction of the
Health Clinic at North Side Seventh-day Adventist Church, which

was our major collective undertaking. Since the budget for this
project was not realized, we were able to assist in taking the
building up to the level of the ring beam of the first floor. We
thank the Tobago Chapter of ASI for their specific contribution to
the health clinic. One of the other great seminars focused on how we can use technology
to enhance both our business as well as the mission of the Church. This was presented by Abel Marquez, the Associate Communications Director for the Inter-America Division. With lack of funding being identified as one of the causes for some ASI chapters not being successful, Pastor Theodore Jaria conducted a seminar on ‘How to raise Funds for Projects’. He pointed out that one of the ways to gain funding for a project is to get the involvement of outside individuals or agencies. However in order to do this projects must be properly planned and presented, so that donors can have confidence that the project will be executed efficiently and honestly. Dr Manuel Alva made a presentation on ‘Reaching the mind of the Post Modern’ with the Gospel. He traced the history of religious thinking from the pre modern era to the postmodern where almost anything goes and there was no established standard of morality.

One of the best received seminars was one conduct by Dr Roy Adams entitled ‘13 Things I’ve Learned and wish I'd Learnt Earlier’, where he itemized various self-development and self-fulfillment concepts which all of us need to adopt much sooner in our lives. Some of these included being yourself,; developing a sense of self-worth,; recognizing that we can make something of our lives even from humble beginnings; recognizing the importance of setting goals among other things.

Tracey Johnson, daughter of Vice president Victor Johnson and a communication expert trained us on how to ensure excellent customer service in our organization and thus exceed our client’s expectations.

Two of the seminars focused on very serious medical concerns that were gender specific and so the males and females were divided to hear Dr. Elmo Rodriguez speak on the Prostate while Dr Esther Garcia spoke on breast cancer. The opportunity was provided for the attendees to have their questions answered and this proved very useful to many.

One of the highlights of the convention was the Market Place Ministry where the various chapters made presentations on the different projects and programs which they had executed during the year. Each delegation marched up in their national dress, proudly parading their flag as they took to the podium and made their presentation. For this Convention most of the reports were in the form of a video production and Pastor Leon Wellington, Executive Secretary of ASI-IAD commented on the high quality of many of the multi-media work. It was evident form the various reports from all over the region that ASI is making an impact in their communities many engaging in relevant and meaningful projects. It was announced that the ASI initiated project “Good Samaritan Inn”, In Kingston Jamaica had been selected as one of the beneficiaries of the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s thirteenth Sabbath Offering. Many other projects have caught the attention of their National bodies and are being recognized for their impact in the various countries.

One of the initiatives which was started at the Convention was the hosting of four networking sessions, where individuals involved in similar industries or vocations were able to formalize contact with ech other and register for a joint database which will be administered through the website. (www.asi.interamerica.org ).

Dr Roy Adam, former Editor of the Review and Herald gave the closing address during which he spoke of his dream for a day when the power of the Holy Spirit would be poured out in such copious measures that the whole world would be riveted to the amazing work which the Lord was doing through His people. The program ended with a rallying charge by Pastor Everett Brown as he challenged us to be bold and passionate and conquer our fears as we cease every opportunity to share Christ with all those people who need to know him. He urged us to grab every opportunity, with every business contact and with every business deal, to let desperate and hopeless sinners know that Jesus saves and He satisfies.

For forty mesmerizing minutes he alowed to dream with him a dream he has harbored for many years. Under the topic- The Magnitude and the Complexity of the Mission he wondered aloud -How would we get this mission accomplished with such a great magnitude and such complexity. The Mission as it stated was given by Jesus Christ Himself in Matthew 28 v 18-19 when he instructed us to and finish the gospel.

Dr. Adams spoke of the time he first visited Bomaby India, and saw the great multitude that lived in poverty. Though previously being an ardent anti-poverty advocate he was so overwhelmed by the enormity of the problem as displayed by such a vast population that he lost his activist zeal, being overcome by the magnitude of the task. Another experience which demnstrated the enormity of the challenge we face was when he share a flight with a young man from Saudi Arabia and during thheir conversation was sudenly sruck by the fact of how long it would take to meaningfully introduce Jesus Christ to a person such as this. The gap between his backgrong and christianity wa so huge.

In thoughful mood the preacher recalled his awaking to the complexity of our mission when he visited the Worldn Council of Churches
23002014-08-16T00:00:00-04:002021-10-02T18:01:47-04:00Convention Unveils- How to Gain the Health AdvantageRohan RileyThe Lord has an advantage for us so that we can be able to accomplish our endeavors, both in business and other areas of our lives". This was said by Dr. Elmo Rodriquez Sosa, as he spoke at the annual ASi-IAD Convention being held in La Puebla, Mexico. Stating that God's desire is for us to be healthy and prosperous, not only to benefit our business enterprise but because He wants to dwell in us as reference in 1 Corinthians 13 V16-17. Therefore although our bodies tend to degenerate as we age, and aches and pains seem inevitable; this doesn't have to be so, and God has given us a plan to prevent this. It is as we follow that plan that we will gain the advantage in our lives.

Dr. Rodriquez was talking under the topic' How To Take Care of Your Health', and postulated that the degenerative process occurs in all three major areas of our health and therefore we should pay attention to each of these. Our bone system suffers from rheumatoid arthritis and arthritis in the spine. This leads to pain and suffering in our bodies extending from our shoulders, fingers, hips, knees and joints all over. However this problem is primarily caused by us introducing things into our bodies that stimulate inflammation, and that impedes proper blood circulation. Therefore by avoiding fatty acids, high cholesterol foods, and living an active lifestyle we can restrain this process. This is part of the better plan that God has for us.

Osteoporosis, where our bones loose density and its ability to maintain our frame is also one of the common problems in this area. This is due to calcium loss in our bones and is contributed to largely by things we put in our bodies which stimulate calcium loss, such as sodas which contain phosphoric acid along with coffee and caffeine beverages. Lack of vitamin D is another contributing factor, and over 80% of us are said to have less than the minimum recommended levels, while this is readily available by exposing our self to adequate sunlight each day. Another major cause of this disease is the eating of excess protein, which our body combats by releasing calcium from our bones. So by eating less meat, cheese and butter we can greatly increase our chances of avoiding this problem, and especially if we sit for most of the day we should limit our daily protein intake to 50g.

The second area that we need to pay attention to , according to our presenter, was our mental health and nervous system. we should keep an eye on our level of stress as while the production of cortisone and adrenalin helps us with alertness, any excess starts to "eat away" at our brains. We need to plan our daily activities so that we can better manage our obligations and reserve time to meditate and accept God's promise in Isiah 25 v 3 that "our minds will be kept in perfect peace if we focus on Christ". We can preserve our mental health and nervous system by learning to break our routine and relaxing sometime, by being creative and doing things in a different way, and by challenging our brain each day. Another secret for a better brain is to read the Bible, and it has been shown that this along with worship and thanksgiving causes a mental boost and increases our mental capacity.

Roman 12 v 2 tells us that we can be transformed by the renewing of our minds, and there is guidance in the scripture of how we can develop the kind of brain that is healthy and active by following God's plan. He wants us to spend more time in nature and less before the computer, not to be enclosed in 4 walls of voluntary confinement. He wants us to befriend people with warm and tender hearts who show love and empathy to others. He wants us to meditate, relax and reflect, taking time to incorporate His word into our lives as we meditate o the scriptures.

From 2004 until present Dr. Rodriquez has been the guest doctor on the radio program Clinica Abierta which is produced by WZOL FM station San Juan, Puerto Rico. For 28 years he has integrated his knowledge of medicine, nutrition, botany, hydrotherapy and lifestyle to develop an alternative practice of medicine. He shared with us 7 secrets to improving our brain. These include learning to face negative emotions, engaging in satisfying activities, learning to forgive ourselves, avoid loosing focus on our objective by looking away too much ,sticking to a cause greater than our self to take selfishness from our hearts, love and let our self be loved. Quoting from the apostle Paul who said " now abides hope, faith and love. but the greatest of these is love. The doctor advised us to love with no strings attached.

The last area of emphasis in this discussion on how to take care of our health and gain the health advantage focused on the cardiovascular system. Dr. Rodriquez emphasized that inactivity damages circulation, which is essential for carrying oxygen and nutrients throughout our bodies, but also allows excess waste to exit our bodies, which if remaining will cause the degenerative process to accelerate. And so to foster good blood circulation we need to move our bodies and avoid inactivity.

Smoking and caffeine beverages also damages our circulatory system by closing our arteries, increasing our blood pressure and accelerating our heart rhythm, similar to what occurs when we are under stress.

We should pay close attention to our lipid profile, which shows the levels of lipo protein or fat carrying enzymes in our blood. Brain scans of those over 60 yr old shows the degenerative process on the small blood vessels and tissues which contain our memories and our spirituality. We need to protect these. We also need to check our blood pressure as built up pressure in our major blood vessels will start to damage our kidneys, brains and heart. If a blockage occurs in these we will have a heart attack and if in our small vessels in the brain we will have a stroke. We must also watch our body weight , and not just by looking in the mirror, but by knowing our body mass index to see if we are normal, overweight or obese.

Ending on the note that God crated our body and its organs to function harmoniously, he implored us to learn God's plan and follow it, so as to live long, healthy and productive lives. As the scripture says, "Teach us to count our days.".
22992014-08-16T00:00:00-04:002021-10-02T18:02:03-04:00La Puebla Welcomes ASI ConventionRohan Riley The Annual Convention of the Inter-America Division Adventist-Laymen Service and Industry (ASI) commenced at the Holiday Inn Finsa in Puebla, Mexico on Wednesday August 13th,2014.
Metro Mission 2014 (MM14) came alive in the Drews land Community from January 31 to March 2, 2014. This happened when Dr Marston Thomas, ASI IAD President, with the aid of the Holy Spirit raised the spiritual awareness of the 45 registered participants and other supporting members as he presented 24 life changing lessons in a Revelation Seminar.

Along with other Seventh Day Adventist churches in Kingston, the Washington Gardens church, situated at 41 Headley Avenue in Kingston 20, embarked on a mission to continue its positive impact on its immediate environs. The objective was met as ‘The “Star” of the Drama of Revelation’ and other topics were presented in an interactive format.

Six lessons were presented each week over the four week period. At each session, the host, Janeine Laing anchored the activities by recapping details of the previous lesson, engaging the audience through question and answer sessions and introducing special features. The features include presentations on Community Building, Health and Family Issues, Youth issues and a Prayer Tower.

The Washington Gardens church is known for its rich musical offerings. This tradition was maintained as at each session rich music was used to set the tone for the dynamic presentations by Dr Thomas. Frequently heard and little understood topics like “The Mark of the Beast” were explained. As the seminars progressed the truths of Revelation, which to some participants were considered difficult, were made plain.

Seminar Attendee contemplates as he reads the Bible

With clearer understanding of the end time prophecies and a sense of urgency, commitments were made by church members and visitors to live in such a way as to avoid “The Mark of the Beast” and accept “Righteousness by Faith”. By the end of the Seminars, there were three baptismal services with a total of seventeen souls added to the kingdom of God. Other prospects are being followed by the presenter and team.

One of the regular attendees stated that the seminar could not have come at a better time as everyone needs to have some basis for hope.

Seminar Coordinator, Dale Flynn and the leadership team of the church gave oversight to the program.
The Food Drive and Fundraiser, branded “Connecting and Sharing” was the second Annual Food Drive held by ASi to provide food baskets for the less fortunate members of the society. Food solicited at supermarkets from generous shoppers was handed over to the Community Services Director, Pastor Wesley Nyack, who, together with his team of Community Services Leaders, started distributing baskets on Sunday, December 15, 2013, says ASi President, Annie K. Price.

The Food Drive, held November 23rd to December 7th at all Fosters Food Fair Stores with additional days at Hurley’s Supermarket, has been a most rewarding experience with an overwhelming response from the public, says Ms Price. Shoppers maybe on a tight budget, but they gave nevertheless, knowing that their generosity will reap bountiful blessings. Amongst coins collected was found a silver pendant with a cross in the center and the word “Blessings” written on it. God has truly blessed the people of the Cayman Islands who in turn continue to given willingly to those in need. ASi volunteers were commended by members of the public for giving their time and efforts to such a worthy cause and those who were not in a position to offer food items made donations.

Rohan Riley, past ASi President and current distributor of LASCO products in the Cayman Islands, swelled the baskets with a very generous donation of food items.

At distribution, recipients expressed their gratitude and before parting prayers were offered for the donors, the participants and the beneficiaries. “Keys To Happiness” a booklet containing the main ingredients for a happy life was added to the food basket.

ASi and the Community Services Department of the Cayman Islands Conference of Seventh-day Adventist Church expresses thanks to all donors, supporters and promoters. Because of their kindness, many will be blessed during the seasonal celebrations. God Bless all who participated in this great effort and those who kindly gave to help others in need.

Confessing that he more trust the businessmen of the church with commercial endeavors than other persons , he focused on Jesus' admonition to “occupy till I come”. The much repeated tale that the believers in 1844 sold everything and stopped working is really a myth, as the church kept on working even as they waited on the return of Jesus.

Using the story of the talents, he asked us to consider what were the things that could lead us to suffer the fate of the man with one talent, who proved unfaithful. The first thing identified by our speaker was our belief that our success is due entirely to our ability and our skills without recognizing that it is God who gave the reward. This is what often leads the rich to experience so much difficulty in returning the tithe, as while a few pennies may be easy to part with when the income approaches or surpasses millions of dollars; most people are challenged to remain faithful. However we should always remember that the Lord admonishes us to “occupy till I come”, giving us the assurance that he is indeed coming back for his faithful people.

Pastor Leito bemoaned what he saw as the second problem faced by those involved in industry and commerce, and that is being carried away or caught up in the practices of the business or industry. Sometimes the Christian businessman gets caught up in the environment that he operates in where everyone may be involved in some corrupt practice. However he must remember at all times that he is not like the others, but is a child of God “occupying till Jesus comes”.

The Christian businessman must continue to love his brethren, to take care of his church and do all that he can to advance the cause of Christ. Business and Industry will be part of what is happening until Jesus comes; we should carry on with these activities, keep being productive and diligent, but at all times fully aware that at any moment Jesus will come. We can be successful in business and not lose our faith; the Christian businessman can continue advancing his business and keep his heart focused on his Lord, looking for His return.
20122013-08-16T00:00:00-04:002021-10-02T17:59:30-04:00Spirit-Filled Prayer Sessions at ASI ConventionRohan RileyOne of the special features of the 13th Annual ASI Convention being held in San Jose, Costa Rica, was the daily hosting of a testimony and prayer session. This was hosted by Pastor Telemaque, Director of Adventist Mission and the Inter-America Division’s Sabbath School Director. He used each meeting to focus the delegates on building up their faith in God and to “give their business back to Him, so that He can direct them and bless them with success. Using 1 Samuel 1: 27 -28, and 1 Corinthian 1:29 he counseled the business people to give their businesses back to God, just as Samuel had been given back to Him. Whe need to relieve ourselves of the stress of trying to run our businesses all by ourselves, doing it our way, and trying our methods to gain success. When we give the business to God, He will show us what He wants us to do with it and what decisions He wants us to make. With God in controll and we following His lead, then success is guaranteed.

Each day many persons came forward to tell of how God had lead them through various challenges and brought them to a successful outcome. Sis Zoila Aquino from the Dominican Republic, testified of God’s goodness to her after the death of her husband. The Lord guided her through the trials of being a single mother and helped her to develop the medical center that her husband had left behind. Though times were tough and she suffered deprivation and want, she chose to remain faithful and the Lord has seen her through.

Another powerful testimony was that of Sister Claudette Paul-Pearsell who experienced many years of abuse, but made the decision not to retaliate, assuring herself that nothing could happen to her without God’s permission. Her abuse extended to the point of her even being denied the means of her daily sustenance. However she persevered and without having any capital she stepped forward in faith and started a small business. Now the Lord has blessed her effort and her faith and she has a successful business in the center of the city.

Brother Dave Williams, chapter president from Bahamas, spoke of how the Lord directed him and his wife to also start a restaurant business, even though they were looking in other directions. After much effort at securing a job for his wife, he was lead to opportunity of opening up the restaurant which has now grown to be very successful.

Each day delegates knelt before God and outpoured their heart to Him. Some were brought to tears, others were openly overcome by the Spirit of God and we prayed and sang to God’s honor and glory. While we gathered to learn skills and make plans, felt that they will remember this convention more so for these special moments when business and professional persons from all over the Inter-America Division took time out to meet with Jesus.
20112013-08-16T00:00:00-04:002021-10-02T17:59:51-04:00President Dr. Marston Thomas Returns as New Board is Elected.Rohan RileyThe nominating committee of the 13th Annual ASI Convention elected it’s new Board of Directors to lead the organization for the next two years was returned as president to continue the programs and...
The nominating committee of the 13th Annual ASI Convention elected it’s new Board of Directors to lead the organization for the next two years was returned as president to continue the programs and projects which were initiated during his first term. This was the group Impact 2000, that came to the 13th ASI Convention and thrilled and inspired us with singing and preaching and raising the roof with their high impact, impassioned praises to God.

The ASI chapter delegates could not contain themselves as the group belted out “John Saw Jerusalem, the City of God”. Shouts of joy, clapping, and shouting took over the convention program as everyone laid aside their inhibitions and joined the young people in their openly joyful praise. It was undoubtedly one of the high points of the evening.

Impact 2000, is a group of young people from various Caribbean countries who journey over the Division each year sharing the gospel message through the voices of youth and children. Numerous simultaneous campaigns are conducted, and the young people also engage in community outreach activities in the regions where they minister.

Sis Marvelee Franklin , the group leader was called to the stage by Pastor Telemaque and presented with an award in Inter-America Division for her work with these young missionaries, Vice-President, of the Division. This was handed over by Pastor Wellington. In an interesting twist, the son of Sis Franklin was also similarly awarded by the Inter-America Division. He was cited as being one of the most outstanding youth mission leaders in the division, and had the distinction of raising up the first Spanish speaking church in the Bahamas. It was therefore only fitting that Pastor Leonard Johnson President of Atlantic Caribbean Union Mission made the presentation.

The group continues its current mission in Limon, Costa Rica where preachers as young as 6 years old are sharing the word of God, and impacting the local community. There month long mission will conclude on August 26th, and they will return for the final convention day on Sabbath, August 17th.

In an interview following their performance, Sis Franklin revealed that she assisted in starting this program in response to seeing young people losing interest in the Church and leaving in great numbers. The Lord impressed her and the other initiators that a program of involvement and witnessing was the answer to this problem. This program thus started and through it her 4 children have also developed into outstanding missionaries and are active members of this team.

Pastor Canals is a passionate preacher who has brought hope and comfort to thousands through his ministry.

He related to the audience an occasion when he received a letter that had just one line which said, “ My life is not worth living, I want to die.”. There was no name attached , and no way for him to know who the person was. It broke his heart, but he did all that he could do, that is he prayed for this individual who had obviously lost hope.

Many persons are committing suicide more and more each day, bemoaned the compassioned preacher, as he revealed that over 30,000 persons kill themselves in the USA each year, while over 750,000 make an attempt to do so. He told the story of a businessman whom he knew, whose business was failing, and one Sabbath while his family was in church he took a gun and shot himself. Against this back-drop he encouraged us to have hope and trust in God.

With his heart overflowing with pain, he offered to share with us 13 verses which he thought could change our lives. Citing support from the writings of Ellen G. White, he quoted, “these words should be written in every heart”. Pastor Canals by now had fully opened himself to the control of the Holy Spirit, as he repeated with passion and conviction the verses of 1 Cor.vs 1-13. “The best way is love”, came his appeal, knowing the prophecies is important, doctrines are important, but best thing is love,; love for God and love for our neighbors is what will get us into Heaven.

By following the principles of this great chapter we will learn how to order our lives, how to order our relationships and how to live for God. We need to be careful that love is the motivation for all our actions. These words teach us how to persevere, how to have patience with our wives and our children and our associates.

Now abideth Faith, Hope and Love; these three, but the greatest of these is Love.

This was held on Wednesday August 14, 2013 at the Barcelo, San Jose Palacio Hotel, in San Jose Costa Rica. The Board of Directors and the executives took the stage to share their joy at having this dream realize.

Chairman, Pastor Ernal Scott emotionally spoke of how this marked an important milestone in the Seventh-day Adventist evangelistic efforts in the country. Eduardo Viales the coordinator of the program who is also the Treasurer and Communication Director of the Central/South Costa Rica Conference thanked all the persons who were involved in this project. He highlighted that of the twenty-two persons who are working on the project over ninety percent are volunteers. Even more astounding was the revelation that some of them were not even Seventh-day Adventist, but were no the less, passionate about the mission.

This television network, which will be broadcast on channel 38 in the cities and channel 47 in the rural areas, is estimated to have a potential listening audience of over two million persons. Live streaming will also be available as well as on Cable Company. Many persons have been calling in to seek additional information. He thanked 3ABN for its help during the initial stages and also Pastor Wellington, who was always interested in helping them to move forward. Abel Marquez, Associate Communication Director, Inter-American Division, spoke of how this dream started during a communication summit some years ago, and how the idea grew to its realization today.

Since its brief initial introduction, testimonies have already come in of how lives are being affected by the sharing of the Gospel. A video presentation was shown of a man who was about to take his life when he turned to channel 38 and heard the Word of God. He called the station and the lady who answered prayed with him, and encouraged him not to kill himself. He subsequently kept in touch with her and attended some meetings that she invited him to. He turned his life around through the grace of God and now even his health has improved and he has started to share with his associates how his life was changed.

Pastor Dennis Krause, Vice President of Hope Channel, who was a special guest at the Convention congratulated the team and welcomed them to the family of channels. He also presented the chairman with a beautiful plaque to commemorate the event.
20032013-08-14T00:00:00-04:002021-10-02T17:58:03-04:00ASI-IAD 13th Annual International Convention Opens in Costa RicaGreg JamesThe 13th Annual ASI-IAD Convention started on Wednesday August 14, 2013 with a lively and colorful opening ceremony in the hall of the Barcelo, La Palacio Hotel, in San Jose Costa Rica. Traditional dancers choreographed a delightful series of presentations in their cultural costumes, including men sporting straw hats and the ladies in long flowing gowns.

Special tokens were presented to all the chapter presidents by the Costa Rican delegation, and national memorabilia was handed out to the entire audience. The group then returned with costumes replicating beautiful birds. As the smiling young ladies floated across the stage with their long train swooshing through the air it closely resembled birds in flight. The intermittent shriek of the high soprano voice leant even more to the imagery.

Sister Princess Lawes, Director of ASI-IAD then introduced the various delegations as they paraded forward in their resplendent national costumes, and proudly displaying their national flags. Many groups brought national memorabilia which they distributed to the appreciative audience. Almost everyone tried to capture this vibrantly colorful spectacle on cameras, smart phones and other digital media.

The general welcome was given by Pastor Jose Vallejos, President of the Costa Rican Conference while greetings were brought by Pastor Wilfredo Ruiz, Union President, Dr. Xinia Lizano, ASI Chapter President and Dr. Marston Thomas, President ASI-IAD.

A local singing group, the Tucker Sisters, then thrilled us with their angelic voices, as they sang of how Christ has shed his blood for us so that we don’t have to pay for our salvation. The audience sat mesmerized as they filled the hall with their conviction of how “Christ did it all”.

The program was hosted by Pastor Leon Wellington, Executive Secretary of ASI_IAD, who welcomed everyone and gave the outline of the week’s program. He also made a presentation on how to establish and maintain a vibrant ASI chapter.

A special feature of this Convention was the launch of Esperanza TV Costa Rica. This marks an important milestone in the Seventh-day Adventist evangelistic efforts in this country and the Board of Directors and Executive members conducted an impressive ceremony to mark the occasion.

It was then time for the guest speaker, and he was introduced by Dr. Marston Thomas, President, ASI-IAD. The special guest speaker was Dr. Ramon de Jesus Canals. He is the Vice-President of the North Pacific Union and conducts inspiring evangelistic campaigns each year.

Speaking mostly without notes and quoting a whole chapter of the scriptures from memory, Pastor Canals delivered an awe inspiring message on the centrality of love in leading us into the kingdom of God.

Everyone left the hall feeling satisfied that Convention 2013 was off to a good start.

He delivered the main address of the meeting on Sabbath Morning, August 18th, 2012, and provided a prelude to his address with a beautiful musical rendition. His melodious tenor voice rang out in the convention hall as the audience exclaimed its pleasant surprise and erupted in approval as he concluded a well delivered piece. Earlier, Pastor Leon Wellington, Executive Secretary of ASi-IAD and host of the program, indicated that Dr. Folkenberg had been a member of a quartet during his young days. He also revealed that Pastor Israel Leito, IAD President had reportedly also been a member of that group.

Dr. Folkenberg, subsequent to his demitting office, has developed the international evangelistic organization ‘Share Him’, which has taken over eleven thousand lay people on mission trips around the world. Leading off from this platform, he challenged the congregation to carefully consider the fact that the prescription that the Bible gives for our salvation included both believing on Jesus Christ and also confessing Him before men. (Romans 10 v 9). If we don’t embrace a life of confessing our faith and sharing what we believe to the world, then we will not be saved.

In a presentation with spell-binding depth and intrigue, Pastor Folkenberg, asked the question, “What do we confess to men?” Can we answer that most basic of religious question, How does one receive salvation? He then contrasted the concept of being saved only by Grace, with the many repeated scriptural admonition that those who are saved are the ones who are obedient to the word of God. Romans 3 v 20, 24, 28 states that we are justified by Grace, and not the deeds of the Law, while Mat 16 v 27 says that we will be rewarded according to our works. Jesus Himself clearly stated in Mathew 19 v 17 that” if thou will enter into life, keep the commandments.” (also James 2 v 24).

So if the Bible states that we need to be obedient to the commands of God and that we are saved by Grace through the shed blood of Jesus, and not by what we do, then is not this contradictory. As Seventh-day Adventist we admonish our friends and associates to accept Christ and obey His Law, while many other denominations counter that it is not a requirement for salvation that we obey, but just accept Jesus sacrifice by faith.

Pastor Folkenberg confessed that this issue bothered his mind for many years and he devoted time to pray and study this topic. It became clear that many persons in the audience shared a captivating interest in resolving this also. The speaker explained that after five years of studious contemplation he concluded that the purpose of our obedience is not to gain our salvation, nor even to demonstrate to the world that we are saved, but it is for us, ourselves to know. Quoting from the I John 2 verse 3, “Hereby we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments”.

Eve sinned not when she ate the fruit, but when she decided not to depend on God, but on her self, her own thoughts and her own idea in deciding what to do without taking into account what God wanted her to do. The sin was her rebellion. When she disobeyed and took the fruit, she then knew that she had sinned. God provides the commandments for us to know whether we know Him, whether we love Him, whether we have truly accepted His grace, whether we have salvation. It makes our rebellion visible, it provides the reality that sin would leave some mark. The prohibited conduct is not the sin; it is the evidence of our rebellion.

As the large audience left the convention hall, many clamored to greet the speaker and express their joy and appreciation for such an inspiring presentation
